Priorities

Some people just get it when it comes to priorities and the real values of this life. They show by action, and not just words, that they know what counts. They give me insight which I sometimes manage to ignore.

In the Bible, there is a familiar story of a woman who came to Jesus while he and others were eating. She took an expensive jar of perfume and anointed him with it. Some there criticized that the money from that perfume could have been used for much better, nobler and more productive purposes.

Jesus, who certainly never lived a life of luxury or waste but one of sacrifice, nevertheless, affirmed her priorities of worshipping the Lord with her finest. Palm Sunday and the Triumphal Entry followed close behind. Of course, by the end of that week, Jesus offered himself in sacrifice for us at the Crucifixion.

I have seen families in our school again and again make incredible sacrifices to have their children at Cambridge Christian. They see something of great value, and they make the commitment it takes. Loans on home equity that was barely there, draws on retirement funds, significant lifestyle changes were all included in the sacrifice. Grandparents have stepped up many times to help.

In 25 years of Christian education, I’ve seen many people make such sacrifices, but Tampa’s economy has brought those sacrificial decisions in gut-wrenching numbers. I’ve seen parents ‘anoint Jesus with that perfume’ literally 100s of times during my five and half years at Cambridge Christian.

Some families have had to leave, though they were sacrificing and the school was assisting. They lost a job or were nearing bankruptcy, and had to make a tearful decision which they pray the Lord will turn around soon for their children. Cambridge Christian is not everyone’s choice. Some families leave for reasons other than finance. I’m not saying the only spiritual decision is to sacrifice and stay.

My point is that in the actions of those around us, we can get a fresh, encouraging and even convicting view of what the Lord is doing in the lives of children and families at Cambridge Christian. And seeing that value, they make it a priority above almost any other in their lives. They know the value, and make the commitment. They are part of us here at Cambridge Christian, and we all are stronger and better for it.
